While road trips can be a fun travel adventure, the hours spent in close proximity to your friends and family might look a lot like this Snickers commercial if you don’t have the right food handy.

If you’re hitting the road this Labor Day weekend, we’ve put together a few tips on what you should pack to keep the peace with your fellow passengers.

Nuts are a Healthier Snack for Road Trip Drop the potato chip bag and grab the nuts. If you are craving something salty, pack an assortment of nuts. They are a great source of protein and will keep your stomachs full and happy (Keep in mind- one portion is about the size of your palm).

It’s all fun and games, until you come off that sugar high. When you stop for gas, steer clear of the infamous Slurpee machine. Instead, grab healthier, refreshing choices like vegetable juice, coconut water or a sugar-free iced tea. This will help you avoid that sugar crash that leaves you tired and grumpy.

On a Road Trip Bring Your Own Lunch Box With Healthy SnacksBring your lunchbox from elementary school. Think about the snacks your parents would prepare for you when you were little. It probably included the perfect combination of veggies, protein and sweets. So bring along some string cheese (you are never too old for string cheese!), mini peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, baby carrots, crackers and – if you crave something sweet – just remember not to go overboard on the cookies and stick with the serving size.
